**Warning: This article contains spoilers for *The Summer I Turned Pretty* season 3, episode 5, "Last Dance."**

Cocoa has always been Belly's (Lola Tung) specialty, but peaches might now be even more important to her relationship with her ex Conrad (Christopher Briney) on *The Summer I Turned Pretty*. (Sorry, Jeremiah, no strawberries here.)

Prime Video's adaptation of Jenny Han's beloved book trilogy once again delivered an iconic moment revolving around food for the exes, and the creator actually stepped behind the camera to direct for the first time specifically because she wanted to take on the peach scene herself.

"I knew that it was a scene that was important to the fans, because people were always asking if they were going to get the peach scene," Han tells **. "So I really did want to deliver something that hopefully felt close to their imagination. I was just happy the fans were happy."

The episode puts Conrad in the narrator's chair as he can't stay away from Belly, helping her out with errands for her wedding to his younger brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). When they drive by a roadside peach stand as the sun sets, he sees the longing in her eyes, so he pulls over for a pit stop. He watches her joyfully eat two of what she calls the best peaches she's ever had — and he can't stop himself from wiping the juice off her chin with his shirt. Nothing else happens — no kiss, sorry Team Conrad fans — but it's such an intimate moment that it scares both of them, since they're clearly still in love yet can't be together because of her impending nuptials with Jeremiah.

Below, Han breaks down that romantic Belly and Conrad moment, as well as that scream-inducing flashback at the end of the episode (it's 100 percent Connie's look, baby) and Conrad's narration. Plus, check out EW's exclusive annotated script pages for the peach scene.

**: In the book, we see the peach moment from Belly's perspective. Why did you want to show it from Conrad's POV in the show? **

**JENNY HAN: **The whole episode is from Conrad's perspective — [*pauses*] I'm always so careful with my words, everybody's searching for Easter eggs on everything. Why did I do it from Conrad's perspective and not Belly's perspective is what you're asking me. Honestly, it's where it falls within the story. It's a turning point of a moment. The whole episode, you see Conrad really struggling to keep Belly at arm's length because he doesn't trust himself to be alone with her, because then he's going to tell her how he feels, but he really can't resist being near her. That's one of those moments where he's really lost in the sauce and gets swept away by how much he does love her. Getting to see her through his eyes was really important to me.

**How does seeing this moment through his eyes change the way we view the scene?**

It was just understanding the way that he sees her and why he is so drawn to her. In the moment, time slows down for him when he's near her. I've always thought of him as somebody with a very busy mind, with a lot of thoughts, and it's not a quiet place, but she, for him, is a place where he can slow down and feel at peace. You see that throughout the episode.

**The moment where the spell breaks in the book is a little different, since Conrad is the first to avert his eyes. But in the show, it's Belly bringing up Jeremiah's name. Tell me about the decision to change that moment?**

Hmm. I don't know. [*Laughs*] I don't really remember! I mean, I'll look at the book, but I'm not going necessarily side-by-side as I'm writing the script and then I'll refer back to it. But we're in the story that we're in on the show as well. It's just not going to be a word-by-word transference of book to script, so sometimes things do alter. We're on our own timeline.

**That's what makes a great adaptation — it's not a word-for-word recreation, but it's still the same story. We see that in Conrad's nail gun quote in the episode, where a word or two is different, but it's still the same thing. **

It's in a different spot than it is in the book, as well. I knew that that quote from chapter 35 was one that people will be waiting for, and I had seen online people's hopes of what they would get from Conrad's POV, and it was a lot of wanting to see his reactions to certain moments that we've already seen this season — like the engagement lunch or the memorial service. I was really wanting to show moments that they didn't even know existed, and not just be showing his version of things. And Chris is able to communicate so much with his eyes that I don't even think we really need a ton of V.O. But people are excited to hear his voice just because it's a character that has been somewhat more opaque over the course of the show, because we're really seeing him through Belly's eyes.

**What was it like filming the peach scene, especially as a first-time director?**

It was supposed to be filmed on three different days that we did not film it because I was waiting for those flowers to bloom. I didn't want a dirt patch, I really wanted the scene to be magical. Then, finally, the flowers did bloom, which I think was so worth it. We had such a narrow window with the setting sun and getting that really beautiful magic-hour light, so there was just a lot of preparations in terms of timing and placement of the sun and where we were going to be and just wanting every angle to be beautiful. I was really happy with the way that it turned out. For this scene, everyone really super locked in, and I think that's part of why I was so happy at the end of the day.

**Did you choose this episode specifically for your first time directing, or was it just the way the schedule worked out?**

I knew that I wanted to do this one because it had the peaches scene, and I knew people wanted to see the scene from Michaels and also finally get to hear Conrad's voice.

**The flashback to Conrad and Belly hooking up when he stayed in the guest room at her house was, obviously, not in the book at all. But it's so good, and so devastating knowing it takes place on the same day as the flashback last season since we see Conrad's sweater in the corner of the screen. Why did you want to add this scene?**

To offer a little bit more of a perspective on where Conrad was at that moment, and to show that he really was trying and he had good intentions going into prom and that he was doing his best. I'm glad that you caught the sweater. It was a moment where she was trying to connect with him and be there for him and knew he was feeling down. But he really struggles with being vulnerable in front of her and he wants to be strong and the hero for her, but that's what ends up pushing her away ultimately. That's what that moment was to me. And in the second season, she talks about regrets and she says she doesn't regret any of the times they were together — that's one of those times. And the thought pops into his mind at an inopportune moment, since moments later we have Jeremiah arriving at the house.
