- Several cast and crew members have shared their hopes for a *KPop Demon Hunters *sequel.

While blockbusters like *F1*, *Jurassic World: Rebirth*, and *Superman* are dominating conversations about summer 2025's biggest movies, one surprise hit is quietly stealing the spotlight: *KPop Demon Hunters*.

Netflix's *KPop Demon Hunters* premiered on June 20 and quickly captured the hearts of viewers around the world. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the animated musical tells the story of HUNTR/X, a K-pop group that moonlights as demon hunters. Their latest threat is none other than the Saja Boys, a rival boy band that's actually a group of disguised demons.

The movie has skyrocketed in popularity, earning acclaim for its vibrant animation, catchy soundtrack, standout voice performances, and engaging storyline.

It wraps up with an optimistic finale, but is there a second movie in the works? Here's what we know about a potential *KPop Demon Hunters *sequel.

As of writing, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have not officially confirmed a sequel to *KPop Demon Hunters*. However, fans have plenty of reasons to stay optimistic.

*KPop Demon Hunters *has received widespread critical praise, sitting pretty at a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's also been a massive hit with audiences around the world and has remained a constant presence in Netflix's global Top 10 movies for several weeks.

The soundtrack debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 and has since climbed to the No. 2 spot. The song "Golden" also peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 10, with 18.8 million streams, per *Variety.*

Behind the scenes, the filmmakers are already thinking about where the story could go next. In a June 2025 interview with ScreenRant, Kang and Appelhans hinted that the world of *KPop Demon Hunters* is far from fully explored.

"There are always side stories, and there are things we've thought of while making this one," Kang said. "There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore."

Weeks later, Kang expanded on those comments in an interview with *Variety*, emphasizing the depth of the characters' untold stories. "We've set up so much for potential backstory," she explained. "There's a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there's only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes."

"This was Rumi's story," she added, referring to the film's protagonist. "We have backstories for Zoey and Mira — ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn't the movie for those stories."

What happened at the end of KPop Demon Hunters?

The climax of *KPop Demon Hunters* sees Rumi's (Arden Cho) demon roots exposed at the Idol Awards. Demons disguised as her bandmates, Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), reveal her marks mid-performance, outing her true identity to the entire world.

Crushed and humiliated, Rumi flees the stage and confronts her adoptive mother, Celine (Yunjin Kim), begging for an end to it all. But instead of giving up on her, Celine offers Rumi love and support. Still feeling abandoned, Rumi disappears in a dramatic puff of red smoke.

Back at the Idol Awards, chaos erupts as the demon king Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun) crashes the show and takes full control. With his powers, he hypnotizes Mira, Zoey, and the entire crowd, while the Saja Boys take center stage in a twisted attempt to destroy the Honmoon barrier, the magical force keeping the human world safe from demons.

But just when it seems like evil will prevail, Rumi arrives with a brand-new song, and her performance is powerful enough to break the trance. Mira and Zoey snap out of it and jump in for an epic musical number, their voices combining to reignite the Honmoon barrier.

In a final desperate move, Gwi-Ma attacks Rumi, but Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), the demonic ex-Saja Boys frontman, steps in and sacrifices himself to save Rumi, merging his soul with hers and giving HUNTR/X the strength to defeat Gwi-Ma and seal the demons away for good, creating a brand-new Honmoon in the process.

The movie ends on a high note as Rumi embraces her half-demon self and reunites with Mira and Zoey in front of their fans, stronger and more united than ever.

If *KPop Demon Hunters 2* ever gets the green light, one thing's for sure: the voices behind HUNTR/X are more than ready to come back.

Cho, Hong, and Yoo have all expressed serious interest in returning for a sequel. In a June 2025 interview with *Mama's Geeky*, Yoo didn't hold back. "I've already told Maggie [Kang] and Chris [Appelhans] that there has to be a follow-up," she said. "I would totally do it again. I'll be honestly a little bummed if we can't do a sequel."

Cho echoed that sentiment, saying she would be "heartbroken" if a sequel wasn't in the cards.

Will there be a live-action KPop Demon Hunters?

Nothing is set in stone yet, but in a chat with *Forbes*, Kang confessed that she's imagining a live-action version of *KPop Demon Hunters*.

After catching the live-action *How To Train Your Dragon* (2025) in theaters, Kang was full of praise for director Dean DeBlois, who nailed the transition. That got her wondering what a live-action *KPop Demon Hunters* could look like (though she knows it wouldn't be without its own hurdles).

"I really enjoyed [*How To Train Your Dragon*]," Kang said. "I was sitting in the theater thinking, I wonder if anybody would want to see a live-action *KPop Demon Hunters*. What would that be like? How would that go?"**
