Taron Egerton is gracefully bowing out of the race to become the next James Bond.

Now that Denis Villeneuve has been named the next director of the long-running film franchise, rumors are swirling about who will suit up as the international man of mystery, taking over the mantle from Daniel Craig. As a British star who's already proven his abilities as a secret agent, there's no reason Egerton, 35, wouldn't be a possibility — other than the fact that he's not interested.

"I don't think I'm a good choice for it. I think I'm too messy for that," Egerton told Collider when asked if he'd throw his hat in the ring for the role of 007. "I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig's tenure. But I think I wouldn't be good at it, and I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably."

As mentioned, Egerton is no newbie to the spy game. His breakout role as Eggsy in 2014's *Kingsman: The Secret Service* saw him join a secret spy organization, drive a stylish car, whip out several cool gadgets, and save the world from an eccentric villain. The film, whose comic book source material was clearly influenced by Bond, also marked the start of a franchise, with Egerton returning to the role for a 2017 sequel. With director Matthew Vaughn teasing Eggsy's return for *Kingsman 3*, the actor may have already gotten his fill of spy action.

But, Egerton clarified that just because he isn't jumping at the idea of playing Bond doesn't mean he doesn't "have aspirations and plans" or that he's opposed to starring in "more commercial" projects down the line.

Matthew Goode explains how he bombed out with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli

"I think I'm a period in my life where I've been following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I'm sure I won't feel that way forever," Egerton said. "But James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I'm aware, nobody's asking me to do it. But also, it's possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it's a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that."

Egerton isn't the only actor who has expressed this sentiment. Earlier this year, Henry Golding said the 007 gig sounds like "every actor's kind of nightmare."

Golding explained that playing the character would come with a lot of "overhanging cultural pressure," due to the franchise's massive legacy.

Adapted from the popular Ian Fleming novels, the first Bond film was launched in 1962 by Albert "Cubby" Broccoli of Eon Productions, the British production company behind all of the Bond films released so far. Sean Connery originated the role of the suave British superspy, followed by David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Craig.

Broccoli was succeeded as the Bond producer by daughter Barbara and stepson Michael G. Wilson, who concluded their era of the franchise with 2021's *No Time to Die*, Craig's final film in the series. The next slate of Bond films will be a joint venture between Wilson, Barbara, and Amazon MGM Studios. Villeneuve is set to direct the first of these, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman serving as producers.

As for who will take on the stress of filling 007's shoes, the last few years have seen several names floated as potential Bond replacements. Among them are Idris Elba*,* Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Regé-Jean Page, Richard Madden, James Norton, Damson Idris, Cillian Murphy, and most recently, Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
