Jere? Jere who?

With apologies to Team Jellyfish, this episode of *The Summer I Turned Pretty* is all about Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Belly (Lola Tung) as we get a peek at the elder Fisher brother's love, longing, and regret.

As far as Belly knows, Conrad blew off his California job to hang out in Cousins and fix things around the house while shirtless. (Sure, he drops a hammer from the roof when Belly wanders out to the pool in her swimsuit, but the important thing is, it doesn't land on her, which is the sign of a skilled handyman.)

His survival strategy is to stay away from her until she's officially his sister-in-law and he can escape back to California, which is why he declines to drive Belly to town for her wedding errands. As she pedals off on her bike, we get a flashback of young Conrad teaching young Belly how to ride without training wheels, then watching her leave him in the dust. Foreshadowing!

Belly's taking care of wedding business solo because Jeremiah's (Gavin Casalegno) stuck at work, having volunteered to review the StarcadeX revenue report that Adam (Tom Everett Scott) dropped on Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Denise (Isabella Briggs) moments before they were leaving the office for the Fourth of July holiday.

For some reason, queen Denise agrees to let pretty boy handle it, and she and Steven end up on the same train to New York for a gaming convention.

Their antagonism thaws as Steven impresses her with the mobile game he designed and they agree that they're wasting their lives at Breaker Capital. They end up splitting a cab to the convention center, and it does feel a little like "Taylor who?"

Speaking of Taylor (Rain Spencer), she has to bail on helping Belly with wedding planning in Cousins when her mom's home salon inspection gets moved up, and she manages a semi-okay conversation with Steven, who realizes she used her New York money to bail out Lucinda.

'The Summer I Turned Pretty' recap: Crappy birthday, Belly

Belly probably could've used her help, though. Jeremiah's dream cake (two-tier dark chocolate with raspberry coulis and a mirror glaze) at his preferred bakery (they made the cake for Billy Joel's 70th birthday) ends up being $750, which is comically out of their budget.

Jere blows off her text asking for his input — to be fair, he's actually working — so she settles for chocolate cupcakes with different levels of cacao.

Conrad, however, does not blow Belly off when he sees her struggling with shopping bags on her bike, insisting she toss them in the back of his SUV.

As they finish her errands on four wheels instead of two, they discuss the magic of hand-cancelled stamps and that time Conrad wept when Jeremiah mailed a letter using an unmounted mint George Washington Red from his collection.

At the florist's, Connie makes the classic mistake of letting the employee know that they're shopping for a wedding, not a vague "event," which results in a $5,000 minimum spend.

He's also mistaken for the groom, which has him fading into the background before suggesting that they use Susannah's hydrangeas instead.

Back in the car, Belly's struggling to be enthusiastic about everything, and when Connie encourages her to try out the sample cupcakes, she confesses that she prefers milk chocolate, not dark.

Then Jere calls from work to say he's going to be even later than expected, and when Belly tries to float Conrad's idea about a single layer cake with milk chocolate icing, Jeremiah insists that *this* cake from *this* bakery is the one he wants, so he'll just put it on his credit card to pay off later.

Belly's so upset after the call that Conrad loses his fight with his inner monologue, which is chanting "don't do it,* do not do it." * He offers to go to Michael's with her so they can pillage corporate America using a coupon that expires that night.

On the drive, Belly talks about why she decided to become a sports psychologist, and Conrad tells her he's started seeing a therapist for his panic attacks. They agree that they've both grown and changed.

But his feelings haven't, and he goes all heart-eye emoji over her as they shop. It gets him to admit to feeling scared and lonely when he started his life over in California. Oh, and he got fired from his job the night of Steven's accident, which is why he's able to stick around the beach house this summer.

Belly turns it all into a positive, reminding him that mistakes are okay, and so is taking a break before his second year of med school. But maybe he and his therapist should tackle his hero complex.

And now, y'all, it's now time for the peach scene as Belly and Conrad stop at a roadside stand in that golden hour when the setting sun is low and warm and mellow in the sky.

Although eating peaches makes Conrad's mouth itch, watching peach juice drip down Belly's chin makes his heart itch. And that's an issue because there has never been a messier peach eater than Isabel Conklin.

Conrad's whole world narrows down to just Belly, and when he uses the hem of his T-shirt to clean up her sticky face, it is hands-down the sexiest thing to ever happen on this show.

Afterward, Conrad reminds himself that Belly loves his brother, not him. But we see her suck in a big, steadying breath after he walks away. Also, to any youth watching this episode, please go forth and make "Wild Horses" top the streaming charts.

Back at the house, they happily cook dinner together, then tipsily laugh and tease each other while they eat. It's a gorgeous evening until Jeremiah finally makes it to the beach house, and Belly squeals and runs to greet him.

At that point, Conrad's voiceover informs us, "I would rather have someone shoot me in the head with a nailgun repeatedly than have to watch him touching her like that all night." So he hides upstairs while the happy couple heads to the dock.

There, Belly's thrilled to hear that Jere's work actually helped Adam, who now supports their wedding. (Neither of them know it, but this is likely because Conrad warned Adam earlier that he risks driving Jeremiah away if he doesn't get on board.)

Adam's so on board, in fact, that he's going to pay for a ceremony at his country club with all of his clients in attendance. Belly objects to the venue and the guest list, but Jere says it's important to him in order to keep the Adam approval flowing.

So Belly's going to spend the rest of her summer studying for the GRE and apartment shopping for the two of them while Adam's assistant handles the planning. She also surprises Jere with their first-dance song: Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" (aka the song Uma and John twisted to in *Pulp Fiction*).

From his room, Conrad watches them dance under the glow of the fireworks and thinks about what-ifs.

What if he'd told her the truth about Susannah's illness four years ago, just before prom? What if he hadn't made her a deathbed promise to take care of his brother, and what if he hadn't upheld that promise by disappearing to California? What if he hadn't lied about his feelings after that night in the motel room? What if doing any of those things means they could've shared hundreds of dinners like this, with his infinity necklace resting on the hollow of her throat?

But dwelling on regrets won't change reality, and Conrad convinces himself that Jeremiah can give Belly everything she wants and deserves.

**Kissin' cousins corner**

- Long live the Conrad POV! It's such a relief to watch him come to life around Belly while also digging deeper into his feelings, both past and present. Also, that Michael's cart was comically small next to his lanky frame.

- Queen Denise knows what's up: you get to the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three for international, and you get "far, far away from whatever this is about to be" when Taylor and Steven are in the same place at the same time.

- Speaking of Taylor, she yet again has the line of the episode upon spotting Denise: "Who's that Shiv Roy wannabe?

- To paraphrase Taylor Alison Swift, she likes coupons, he digs credit; she's all peaches and he's either 70% or 80% cacao. In other words, Belly and Jere showcased incompatibilities both big and small this week — and the compromise is definitely not a wedding cake with one layer of raspberry and dark chocolate and one of peaches and milk chocolate.
