If there's one thing the British aristocracy hates, it's abdication (see: Wallis Simpson).
But that's exactly the path that Theo, the Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) takes in the season 2 finale of *The Buccaneers. *All season Theo has waffled between his duty to his title and his love for Lizzy Elmsworth (Aubri Ibrag), a woman who is most decidedly not his wife.
In the season 2 finale of the Apple TV+ series, Theo is forced to make a decision once and for all. When his wife, Nan (Kristine Froseth), returns home from her mother's divorce trial in New York, she confronts Lizzy about her affair with Theo, mailing Lizzy a missing earring that Nan found.
Lizzy comes to warn Theo that Nan knows, only for Nan to confront them both and demand that she be allowed to stay at Tintagel as Duchess. But when reports appear in the paper implicating Lizzy in an affair, Nan is distraught and recruits her mom, Patricia St. George (Christina Hendricks) for help. She reveals to her mother that she is carrying the heir to the Tintagel title, a baby who Theo knows nothing about.

After her experiences with Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and Seadown (Barney Fishwick), Nan fears that Theo and his mother will take the baby from her. Her mother suggests she announce the pregnancy to the world at the ball, ensuring her safety.
But before Nan can make her announcement, Theo steps up to the stage first and drops a major bomb — he loves another woman who is not his wife, and as such, he will renounce his title to be with her.
"I love another completely and my love does not deserve to be a secret," he proclaims. "From this moment forth, I renounce my title and all my duties."

Executive Producer Beth Willis posits that this idea first enters Theo's head when Nan offers the ultimatum to protect her position at Tintagel.
"When Nan challenges him on the beach and says that she won't go to the press about Lizzy, but only if she gets to stay in the castle, he has to grapple with his own future and work out whether Tintagel means more to him than Lizzy," Willis tells *. *"It is the only way out that he can see.

"If he renounces it completely, then Nan can't have it either," Willis continues. "And it's the only way ahead to get to be with a woman that he loves and stop living in secret. It's a decision he makes extremely reluctantly, and he does say when he's making this speech that it's been the proudest thing and the honor of his life to have this role. It's a huge, huge decision."

Remmers echoes this, noting that only the depths of truest love could lead him to this choice.
"He sacrifices his history, his blood, his lineage, everything in that moment for love," he says. "I felt really emotional saying, 'It's not always come easy, but it has been the honor of my life to serve as Duke.' And it really has. He hasn't always enjoyed every aspect of it, but he has loved it. He's very proud."

Showrunner Katherine Jakeaways sees Theo's decision, in many ways, as a reversal of the journey Nan's been on for two seasons.
"He's giving up his identity, really," she adds. "Nan spent the entire two series trying to find her identity. In this moment, Theo's basically turning his back on everything that he felt was who he was. But he can't see any way out."
Whether or not there could be another way, Theo has guaranteed he won't be able to take it with this very public announcement.
"The fact that he does that is so huge," Remmers says. "I don't think he can come back from that. He's made that decision, and it's testament to what that man will do for love."

**Producer Joe Innes emphasizes that audiences shouldn't interpret this announcement as some form of vengeance against Nan.
"Lizzy matters more to Theo than anything else in the world," Innes says. "It's an act of love more than an act of war on Nan. He wants to give Lizzy the legitimate love she deserves, and she matters most."
Still, that doesn't mean there won't be fallout for Nan. Initially, Lizzy thinks this is a happy ending for them all, freeing Nan to be with Guy (Matthew Thwarte). But then Nan confesses her pregnancy and her fears for her future child to her once dear friend. The Dowager Duchess (Amelia Bullmore) awaits the arrival of Theo's illegitimate brother, Kit (whom she speaks of ominously), to assume the title, as Nan runs off to disappear into the night.

As for where she might be running to, not even Froseth knows.
"I am just as curious as you are," she says. "I'm hoping she just keeps running. She meets a group of women, and they all raise the baby together somewhere, and she leaves all the drama behind."
Somehow, we think that's unlikely.
