Former costars Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone are longtime friends these days, but they have very different recollections of how their story started.
Douglas, 80, is speaking out after Stone, 67, recalled that the two had a fraught first interaction. They argued at the Cannes Film Festival, which eventually led to him not wanting to screen-test with her for their erotic 1992 movie *Basic Instinct*, she recalled in an Aug. 1 interview with Business Insider.**
"A bunch of us were all sitting, and he was talking about someone and their kids. I really, really knew this person he was talking about," Stone said. "So I said something and he responded to me, saying, 'What the f--- do you know?' It was in regard to a father-child relationship. Clearly, it triggered him."

Stone said Douglas "screams this at me across a whole group of people. And I'm not the person who goes, 'Oh, excuse me, superstar.' I pushed back my chair and said to him, 'Let's step outside.' That's how we first met."
They ended up parting "amicably," she said.**
However, Douglas, who starred in movies including *Wall Street* and *Fatal Attraction *in the ʼ80s, "doesn't remember any argument in that timeframe" between him and Stone, his rep Allen Burry told PEOPLE.**

Burry added, "He actually only remembers seeing and meeting Sharon for the first time when he saw [director] Paul Verhoeven's screen test of her for *Basic Instinct*, and [Michael] said, 'Absolutely, she's the one.'"
The *American President* star "definitely spent time with" Stone at Cannes, but that was when they were promoting *Basic Instinct*, said Burry, who pointed to his already published statement when reached by **. "And by the time they'd done the movie, they were friends," he said.

But the *Casino* actress agrees with Douglas on where they are today.
"I admire him tremendously," Stone said of Douglas.
Whatever happened before filming, it worked. The story about a police detective encountering an alluring novelist as he investigates a horrific murder earned $352 million worldwide, and it was a breakthrough role for Stone.
