- Oteri said Walters mistakenly thought a monitor shot of her in costume was Walters herself.

Barbara Walters did *not* take a little time to enjoy the view upon glancing at Cheri Oteri's impersonation of the legendary broadcast journalist during her final episode of *The View* in 2014.
The *Saturday Night Live* alum recalled a comical behind-the-scenes memory of Walters, who died in 2022 at age 93, during a recent interview on the *Fly on the Wall* podcast with fellow show alums Dana Carvey and David Spade.
"On her last day of *The View*, I interviewed her as her," Oteri reflected to Carvey and Spade. "I remember them saying, 'Cheri, she's never going to go for that.'"**

But, the star remembered, Walters agreed to send herself off from *The View* with a staged sit-down interview with Oteri, who'd previously portrayed Walters on *SNL.*
"They fly me in, we're dressed exactly alike, we look exactly like we're sitting across from each other. The cameras are setting up, she looks at the monitor and she goes, 'My hair! My hair!'" Oteri said.
Then, "her hair guy comes in" and fixes Walters up, Oteri explained, but she then interrupted small talk with the comedian to once again call her hair person over for adjustments.

"We're right about to shoot, she looks and goes, 'What the hell is going on with my hair?'" said Oteri. "The guy comes in and he whispers, 'Barbara, you're looking at Cheri's monitor.'"
Oteri said Walters then "laughed so hard" at her mistake, and that "to see her laugh — *really* laugh — made me feel so good" because Walters was notoriously "so controlled" in a work environment.
"That was a highlight of my career," Oteri finished.

Earlier in the interview, Oteri recalled finding out that Walters died on Dec. 30, 2022, as she was preparing to do a bit in character as Walters on CNN's New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen the following night. She said she got a call informing her that Walters had died, forcing her to reroute her approach to the telecast by paying tribute to Walters instead.**
"I stayed up all night and I just started writing down things, and they said, 'Cheri, we want you to say something about her,' instead of me doing my bit. It was good that I started writing something," she said, adding that, at the time, "so many people reached out to me as if I was her daughter or something."
