As a real-life married couple playing a fictional couple, Dave Franco and Alison Brie have spent a considerable amount of time comparing and contrasting their relationship to that of their characters in the just-released horror movie *Together.*
Fortunately, the actors, who also produced the film, don't see much in common between themselves and their troubled characters, Millie and Tim.
"This relationship in the movie is very different than our real-life relationship," Franco tells *. "*Although I think we were able to infuse the movie with undercurrents of love between us, even when we're at odds, basically the whole film, hopefully, audiences will feel that and still be able to root for this couple even though they're having so many issues."
However, there is one similarity between the couples' love stories that initially slipped past the actors' radar.
*Together, *which infuses a healthy dose of cringe comedy into its horrors,* *opens with a painful — and pubic — proposal-gone-wrong. At a going-away party attended by all their friends, Millie surprises the hell out of commitment-phobic Tim by getting down on one knee and asking for his hand in marriage. Since she doesn't have a ring yet, she pantomimes opening a box with her hands. Visibly stunned, Tim finally manages to nervously ask, "Are you serious?"

While Franco and Brie's real-life proposal was far less awkward, they have described it as "embarrassing" — and there are some undeniable similarities. When Franco proposed, he didn't have an official wedding ring yet. Knowing that Brie wanted to choose it with him and have it made by a friend, he proposed with a vintage placeholder ring... which she was not too fond of.
"It had a really ugly placeholder ring," Brie jokes.
Caught off guard by the proposal, which she was not expecting at that time, and confused by the ring, Brie responded to the gesture with the same three words Tim uses in the movie: "Are you serious?"**

"It is a total coincidence," Brie says of the similarities. "And honestly, because we have been talking about our relationship a bunch as we've been doing press for this movie, we've been telling that story about our engagement. And last night at the premiere, watching the movie again — I hadn't watched it in its entirety in months — yeah, that struck me, too. It actually made me laugh. It's a total coincidence. And the tone was very different, I would say."
"You were more flummoxed in real life," Franco adds.
"I was flummoxed and ultimately delighted. It was like, 'Are you serious, because I don't want to get too excited if this isn't real."
Of course, Brie said yes, and the rest is history. But if she were in a similar position to Millie and got turned down in such a public setting, would she be able to continue the relationship?**
"God, if that happened to me in front of all of our friends, just thinking about that, too, that's a difficult thing to overcome. The humiliation factor would be tough. For a private moment? Yeah, you probably could work through it, but for someone to leave you hanging like that in front of a group of people, it's pretty savage."
"I just feel like it's something that your close friends wouldn't let you forget," Franco notes. "They'd be like, 'Hey, I know you guys are trying to work through this, and you're slowly getting past it, but that sucked. F--- that guy."
*Together *is now in theaters.
