For fans of horror that gets under your skin (literally and figuratively), *Together *is a must-see.
Written and directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, *Together* debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned positive reviews. The word-of-mouth buzz quickly caught the attention of distributors, with Neon snapping up worldwide rights.
*Together* stars real-life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple whose move to the countryside brings them... well, a little *too* close for comfort. The actors told ** that it was one of their most intense and physically demanding projects yet.
Franco and Brie's offscreen relationship helped make Shanks' job a lot easier, though. "Them being a married couple in real life added so much," he told us. "There was such trust between them. They were so comfortable being vulnerable that our most difficult scenes (often involving emotional and physical intimacy) always flowed with ease. It's clear how much they lift each other up and make each other even better."
*Together* delivers gnarly body horror packed with genuine scares, unexpected laughs, and a twisted third act. Below, we break down *Together*'s ending, from the fate of Franco and Brie's characters to the truth behind that creepy cave.
What is *Together *about?
Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco) explore the cave that sets off the events of 'Together'.
*Together* follows longtime couple Tim (Franco) and Millie (Brie) as they move to the country after Millie lands a teaching job.
As they adjust to their new surroundings, Tim and Millie head out for a hike. Caught off guard by a fast-moving storm, they lose their way and fall into a cave. With no way out and night approaching, they decide to settle in until morning.

Running low on water, Tim drinks from a murky pool, a choice that sets off a disturbing chain of events. When they wake the next day, Tim and Millie find their legs partially stuck together. They manage to separate, brushing off the incident as strange but harmless.
Shortly after, Tim begins experiencing episodes where he's physically and inexplicably drawn to Millie, his body reacting violently whenever they're apart. In one scene, he seizes uncontrollably in the shower as Millie drives off, his body twisting in sync with every turn she makes.
The unsettling pull between them leaves Tim and Millie confused and afraid, causing them to wonder: What's happening to their bodies, and could their toxic, codependent relationship be to blame?
Who is Jamie?
Damon Herriman as Jamie in 'Together'.
Jamie (Damon Herriman), Millie's coworker and neighbor, becomes a confidant as tensions arise between the couple. Early in the film, he welcomes them to the neighborhood and shares that the cave they fell into was once a New Age church.
As Millie begins confiding in him about her relationship, Jamie encourages her to hold on to her "other half," referencing Aristophanes' theory of soulmates.
Soon, she and Tim's fusion episodes grow more frequent and severe. One disturbing event finds Millie sawing through their conjoined limb in order to separate them.
Later, she visits Jamie's home only to discover a wedding video showing two people taking part in a ritual to merge their bodies, cutting their arms and pressing them together.
Jamie is revealed to be the result of that ritual, a single body born from two. He appears, telling Millie that he and his husband wanted to "become whole."
He urges Millie to undergo the same process with Tim, insisting that embracing the process is the only way forward. When she resists, Jamie slices her arm, but she manages to escape.
What happens at the end of Together?
Dave Franco as Tim in 'Together'.
As Millie makes her getaway, the film follows Tim as he returns to the cave. There, he finds Simon and Keri, a missing couple he and Millie had previously heard about. To his horror, they've turned into a monstrous mutant mashup, a consequence of trying to rush the ritual.
Tim bolts out of the cave and rushes home, where he and Millie's bodies start to operate like magnets, pulling them together. Tim says he's ready to sacrifice himself to stop the mutation, but after pouring his heart out, Millie's open wound causes her to passes out.
When Millie wakes, she discovers that Tim fused their arms together to stop the bleeding and keep her alive. They surrender to the transformation, figuring that *literally *becoming one is better than living without each other.
In a surreal moment, the couple undresses, embraces, and slow dances to the Spice Girls' "2 Become 1" as their bodies gradually merge.
Later, Millie's parents arrive for lunch and knock on the door, expecting to be greeted by Tim and Millie. However, to their surprise, a single, merged figure appears and welcomes them in.
To top it off, a bell with the cult symbol hangs by the door, hinting that this "Tillie" hybrid has adopted its beliefs.
Is *Together *based on a true story?
Alison Brie as Millie in 'Together'.
No, *Together* isn't based on a true story, but Shanks told EW that the idea was inspired by his own relationship.
"I think when anyone is in a long-term relationship, there comes a point where you realize you have the same friends, eat the same food, breathe the same air — you start to wonder if you can truly tell where you end and your partner begins," he explained. "I thought that was a really compelling place to start to examine in a relationship — what if you took that old cliche of sharing a life and took it to somewhere visceral, and horrifically literal?"
