The victim was hiking with a group of eight people on the Sauk Mountain Trail on Saturday when he fell about 200-250 feet, the Skagit County Sheriff's Office said

The 63-year-old died despite life-saving measures

It is the second death in the Cascades in less than a month

A 63-year-old man died after falling from a mountain trail over the weekend, authorities in Washington state said.

According to the Skagit County Sheriff's Office, the victim was hiking with a group of eight people on the Sauk Mountain Trail on Saturday, Sept. 27, when the incident occurred, The Seattle Times, Cascadia Daily News, NBC affiliate KING and ABC affiliate KOMO reported.

First responders arrived at the scene and found members of the hiking group and others administering life-saving measures to the man, but he succumbed to his injuries.

The man is estimated to have fallen about 200 to 250 feet. according to the sheriff's office.

The victim's identity has not been released, and the sheriff's office said an investigation is underway. (Officials did not immediately respond to a request for further comment from PEOPLE.)

The Washington Trail Association describes the Sauk Mountain Trail as a popular attraction with views of the Sauk and Skagit River valleys, Cascade mountain peaks and, on a clear day, the Olympics and San Juan Islands.

"The way is steep and narrow, and in some places eroded from hikers cutting the switchbacks. Please don't, the switchbacks are there to prevent erosion and environmental damage to the trail," the association advises.

The death is the second fatality in the Cascades in less than a month after Andrew Wong, 37, of Long Island, N.Y., fell near Dragontail Peak in the Enchantments on Sept. 7, according to The Seattle Times.

He had been reported missing when he failed to return from his hiking trip on Sept. 9, per KING.

And in 2018, a 71-year-old female hiker from Connecticut died following a fall from the Sauk Mountain Trail, according to the .

Authorities said at the time that the victim apparently plunged from a steep embankment.
