No. 13 Notre Dame got huge performances from its star running backs in a rainy 34-24 win over No. 20 USC Saturday night.

Jeremiyah Love rushed 24 times for 228 yards and a touchdown, while Jadarian Price had 13 carries for 87 yards and added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second half.

But even with Love and Price being nearly unstoppable, it still took a couple of baffling plays by USC in the fourth quarter for Notre Dame to get the win.

As Notre Dame led 27-24 early in the fourth quarter, USC QB Jayden Maiava found Makai Lemon for a 42-yard pass to get USC to the Notre Dame 37-yard line. On the next play, coach Lincoln Riley called a pass play. But it wasn't for Maiava to throw the ball. Instead, Lemon had the option to pass, and as he went to the sidelines, he didn't throw the ball before he got hit and fumbled.

Notre Dame recovered. Seven plays later, CJ Carr's one-yard run extended the lead to 10.

As rain increased during the Trojans' next possession, USC needed about a foot on fourth down. Instead of running the ball up the middle or even running a QB sneak, Maiava was asked to roll out. No one was open and he fired an incomplete pass.

With those drives sandwiched by Maiava interceptions, each of USC's final four possessions ended in either a turnover or a turnover on downs. All four came after USC took a 24-21 lead on a 59-yard TD pass from Maiava to Ja'Kobi Lane.

And all four came after Price's TD return. USC's lead lasted 15 seconds before Price was in the end zone celebrating.

Maiava finished the game 22-of-42 for 328 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. As he threw 42 passes, USC ran the ball just 29 times for 68 yards.

Notre Dame, conversely ran the ball 44 times and Carr threw just 26 passes. He finished the game 16-of-26 passing for 136 yards and a TD and an interception.

Will the series continue?

The win was the third straight for Notre Dame in the series that dates back to 1926. With the exception of 2020, when the game was canceled as teams modified their schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Notre Dame and USC have played every year since 1946.

That could end after Saturday night. There's no contract between the two schools for the series to continue. Notre Dame reportedly wants to lock USC in for years, while the Trojans want to be more flexible after moving to the Big Ten and the uncertainty around the future of the College Football Playoff format. The game is traditionally played in October when Notre Dame hosts and in November when USC is the home team.

There's certainly room for the game to continue. USC has just one non-conference game scheduled for 2026 and needs two more. For college football fans' sake, the game needs to go on. Conference realignment has taken away too many annual rivalries already. This one doesn't need to bite the dust either.
